"Cheating" can be a strong word when it comes to playing laser tag. While there are some ways to give yourself an advantage over other players, there are ways to straight-up ensure that you will win. It all comes down to what you are comfortable doing in the arena, and whether or not you get caught.

So, is cheating possible when playing laser tag?

It is possible to cheat in laser tag, by covering your laser with invisible tape or your hand, so the opponent doesn't see where the laser is coming from. Covering your gun can also prevent others from hitting you. You can also use a tool called a BIRRD that sends lasers with your code that is invisible to the naked eye.

This article will go into detail on how you can cheat, as well as ways to make it easier to win that aren't considered cheating. As well as other tips and tricks you can try in your next laser tag match to give yourself or your team the advantage.

Feel free to try one or all of these methods to guarantee a win the next time you play laser tag.

How Can I Cheat at Laser Tag?

Here are some effective ways to beat the odds in the laser tag arena.

  • You can cover your sensors, so you aren't hit as easily. You can use something like invisible tape or tac. Just be sure to take it off before returning the equipment, so you don't get caught using those tactics. Some laser tag locations may disqualify you or even ban you if you are caught cheating.
  • Cover your gun's laser, so you don't give away your location. The laser pointer is more so used to help guide your shot. If you are accurate without it, then you can cover the laser with tac or duct tape. This can prevent the enemy from knowing where you are to shoot back or reveal your cover place.
  • Restart your vest to erase the machine's memory of getting shot. You have to unplug a wire in your vest and then plug it back in, and it'll be like you just got your vest again. It will save the shots you did to others since it is saved in their vest, not yours. The wire is located in the recharging socket. Just be sure not to get caught doing it.
  • Use a machine, like a BIRRD, to shoot your laser without showing the laser. The BIRRD runs similar to your TV remote, in that you can't see the laser that it shoots out to turn your TV on and off. You can set your laser gun code into the BIRRD and use that throughout the match to not be spotted by your opponents. Learn how to make one here.

Tips for Playing on the Offensive

You should be shooting your gun continuously throughout the session. If you are constantly shooting your gun, you are bound to hit a target or two.

Be sure your game prevents friendly fire, so you don't hit a teammate by mistake. Or, if you are playing a free-for-all, then you have nothing to worry about. Other tactics include:

  • Look for the newest laser gun. All laser tag guns are not created equal. Some are older than others, which can mean that they don't shoot or register as well as newer models. If you have the chance to check all the guns, go for the best one. This will be easier if you play in the same arena and get the chance to use multiple guns to compare how well they shoot.
  • Pick the gun with the longest range. If you are more of a long-range shooter than make sure you choose the gun with the longest range laser. You can test the guns in the showroom before going into the arena. If you don't get much time, then trial and error with different guns can help assess which is the "best" gun.
  • Get up close and personal with your opponent. Long-range won't always be the best method since the laser isn't as accurate from far away. Stay on the move and try to shoot your opponent from close range to guarantee a shot. It will throw them off as they try to hide or check to see if you are on their team or not. That will give you more than enough time to get a shot or two in before ducking for cover.

Playing on the Defensive

First and foremost, learn the arena that you will be using for your game. Playing in the same arena over and over again will allow you to learn the layout. This will help when you are looking for cover or the best places to see everyone.

Knowing the lay of the land will also give you an advantage over your opponent, especially if they are new to the arena. More tips:

  • Find a good place to camp out. If you can find the perfect place to camouflage yourself and your sensors, then you will be golden. You can let your opponents come to you and rank up all the points. It isn't good to camp out in the same location for the whole game because you'll lose out on points or risk being spotted and overrun.
  • Come dressed for the occasion. Since the arena is usually played in the dark, wear dark clothes to further hide from your opponents. New players may come dressed in lighter colors, which makes them walking targets. Darker clothes will also help you blend in with the covers around the arena for further camouflage.
  • Practice your crouch walk. Laser tag was initially created to allow soldiers to practice shooting in a safe way. Similarly, using war tactics like a crouching walk can greatly benefit you during play. Crouching behind covers can prevent your sensors from getting hit as well as keep your location hidden from the opponent.

Are There Any Other Tips I Should Know About?

Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark. Don't start the game by shooting immediately after entering the arena. You won't be able to see well or target unless they are right next to you.

Which often isn't the case since everyone tends to scatter. Find a good hiding place and let your eyes adjust before going after anyone. In addition:

  • Always stay in the middle of a group. If you are entering or leaving an area within the arena, try to stay in the middle of the pack. Most shooters will go for the first or last players since they are the easiest to target. If you are playing as a team, try to have all your teammates stay in the middle of larger groups as well.
  • Attack from high places. If the arena you are playing in has multiple floors, try to find a good place to camp out on the higher floors. It will give you a better view of the entire arena as well as on all the players. You can shoot from afar, so you are protected while ranking in the points from your opponent's vests.
  • Check where the sensors are on your vest. Not all vests are created equal, and they will have different sensor locations. Check the vests before you start to play to find the vest that has the hardest sensors to hit. This can be sensors that are smaller than other vests or in harder to hit places.

Summary

We've discussed ways you can play laser tag to put you at an advantage as well as ways you can cheat to win. Just be wary when using some of these methods.

You don't want to get in trouble with the arena or your opponents. Lastly, enjoy yourself and have fun out there!
