Pregnancy is an exciting time of life, but it brings with it many questions such as, what can I or can’t I do? Are certain activities safe or unsafe while pregnant?

With my wife's last pregnancy, she was invited to play laser tag with a group of friends, and she had to decide if that was a good choice. She asked, "Can I play Laser Tag when pregnant? "

You can safely play laser tag while you are pregnant, but each Laser Tag facility has its own guidelines about whether they will let a pregnant woman participate.  If you decide to play, make sure to pick a game that is in line with your comfort level.

When you are pregnant, caring for yourself and your baby is paramount.

We are going to explore whether you should or should not play laser tag, any precautions you should take, how to have fun playing while pregnant, and how to respond when an arena suggests pregnant women not play.

How The Laser Tag Guns work

A big concern of playing laser tag is are the laser guns safe for the mom and baby. You may not realize this, but laser guns do not actually use real lasers.

The light guns contain invisible infrared beams of LED, which are harmless to the body. Although you see the LED lights, it is the invisible infrared beam that signals to the infrared receivers found on the vest.

These low energy and low frequency signals and are exactly like a TV remote control. The light you see acts as a visual.

Since the laser guns do not use real lasers, they are safe for you and your baby.

Are all Match Types Safe While Pregnant?

Knowing the different types of matches will be very helpful when pregnant. By having knowledge of the different ways to play, you can make an educated decision on which match will be more appropriate for your stage of pregnancy and physical ability.

The chart below shows the name of some of the common matches, how the matches are played, and if the specific match is safe while pregnant.

GameDescriptionRecommendation
ClassicThis game mode is great for first-time players.  The game has a predetermined length, and players can continually refill ammunition and use the energizer to revive themselves.  You can divvy up the players into teams.  If not, it’s each person for themselves. Whoever has the highest score gets bragging rights. This match is safe for all stages of pregnancy.
Team EliminationAll players have a limited number of lives. The goal is to tag the members of the other team. This match is safe for all stages of pregnancy.
Capture The FlagA player steals the opponent’s flag and takes it back to his or her own base in order to score a point or with the match. This match is safe for pregnancy, but we recommend not being the player to steal the flag if you are in your 3rd trimester.
AssassinationEvery player writes their name down on a piece of paper, and then each player draws a name. The name you draw is your target. The goal is to tag your target before being tagged yourself. Once you tag your target, they give you their piece of paper, and your target’s target becomes your new target. The last survivor wins. This match is safe for all stages of pregnancy, but it might be challenging to play the bigger you get due to moving around a lot and not having a team to rely on.
The Last Man StandingThis game is every man for his own. You try to preserve your limited lives while tagging other players. This match is safe for all stages of pregnancy, but the bigger you get, the more difficult it will be to move around.
Sudden SwapAt random time intervals during the game, or whenever tagged by a member of the opposing team, you are forced to swap teams. Whether you like it or not, you will go from working with your teammates to working against them.Again, safe for all stages of pregnancy, but the quick movements from switching to the opposite may be a challenge to some women.
VIPOne member in the team is selected for the VIP position. Once the VIP is dead, the entire team loses. The goal is to protect your VIP while still tagging enemy players, finding and tagging the opposite teams VIP member, and protecting yourself. This match is safe for all stages of pregnancy. Plus, since all the players need to keep the VIP safe, it’s a perfect role for you.

Despite all the variations on how to play, all laser tag matches follow the basic rules of no running or climbing, no pushing, grabbing or hitting your opponent, no physical contact, and hold the laser gun with both hands.

With these rules, one can see how it can be safe to play laser tag while pregnant.

Why Do Some Laser Tag Centers Not Want Pregnant Women to Play?

Laser tag can be physically demanding. Even though the rules state no running, you may need to make swift movements, which can be challenging while pregnant.

Due to the nature of the game, there is a chance that you may fall, trip, or collide with another player. Some venues also use strobe lights and/or have fog machines, which may make it harder to move around and see obstacles and other players.

Venues have different rules or restrictions on if they allow pregnant women to play. Some venues say yes, some say a strict no while others say they do not recommend it.

It is important to know the guidelines of the venue before attending so you are prepared.

You may need to stand up for yourself if the venue does not encourage pregnant women to play laser tag or be prepared to sit and watch (which is still fun).

How to Have Fun Playing Laser Tag While Pregnant

  • Wear comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes. You will be moving around.
  • Wear dark colored clothes. Avoid white clothing and light clothing.
  • Play with family and friends
  • Play when you are at a comfortable time in your pregnancy.
  • Make sure to stay hydrated! The arena can get hot, and the vest you will wear can be heavy and hot.
  • Move slowly and take advantage of hiding places and lookout points.
  • Quickly learn the layout of the arena

Every pregnancy is different, but you want to play when you are most stable and not prone to pregnancy-related issues, such as nausea.

For most people, that is the second trimester.

Can Laser tag be considered exercise

Yes, even though the rules require walking, the game does use physical exertion and can raise the heart rate and burn calories.
